How Through Our Language Services a Manufacturing Company Built a Team of Foreign Workers in UK
Case Study
The Situation: Lacklustre Performace of Foreign Origin Workers in the Client’s UK Manufacturing Unit
We’ve been regular providers of Manufacturing Company Language Services. So it’s least surprising when manufacturing companies call us for translation, transcription and interpreting services. Transcribe Lingo received a call from a leading manufacturing company in the United Kingdom, but it was unlike any other.
Not only was it grand in scale, but also full of challenges. The problem client was facing was this.
His manufacturing unit was rapidly expanding, so he needed more workforce to keep up with the demand. A skilled workforce from abroad for his company was what he needed.
He said he had managed to build a team of foreign workers, but the ones he had onboarded weren’t performing to the best of their abilities.
He lamented and was frustrated with the situation. He knew the workers had all the skills required for the job but thought maybe the language was an issue and wanted us to bridge language barriers.
The Challenge: Workers’ Inability to Understand English Content & Translating Foreign Works’ Documents from German to English
We’re used to receiving such panicky calls. So it was no surprise to Transcribe Lingo. The project needed brainstorming, so we sat with our project manager to discuss the details. We got into mission mode, as there was no time to lose.
We asked for an onsite visit and the client okayed it. We took with us our German translator as the workers were from Germany to take stock of the situation firsthand and submitted our report to the client.
And we identified three challenges the company was facing in its UK manufacturing unit that lead to the workers’ inefficiency and difficulties in the onboarding process.
Challenge 1 – The client had little time available to oversee the onboarding of foreign workers. Onboarding is a time-consuming process. With the limited availability of time and workforce, the client had no employee to spare to oversee the process.
Challenge 2 – The workers’ documents were in the German language and posed a linguistic challenge to the onboarding process. In the UK, for visa processing and boarding purposes, documents ought to be in the English language.
Challenge 3 – Giving training to the workers in their native language helps them learn more efficiently. English-only training and orientation meant workers didn’t fully understand the instructions.
The client did not doubt his workers’ skills, but their performance wasn’t up to the mark. If anything was hurting their performance, it was their:
-
- inability to understand the instructions imparted in English,
- inability to learn Health and Safety Training instructions,
- inability to comprehend training material.
The Solution: Offered an Array of Language Services to Bridge Barriers
We offered the client a three-pronged solution tailored to his needs. That included interpretation, translation, and project management.
Solution 1 – We offered interpretation services to translate live training instructions and recorded sessions.
Solution 2 – We offered translation services to translate workers’ documents from German to English for official use in the UK.
Solution 3 – We assigned a dedicated project manager to oversee the project at every step. With our project manager at the helm of affairs, the process achieved speed and efficiency.
While our linguists took care of translation and interpreting needs, the project management team ensured linguists’ work was proofread and edited. Transcribe Lingo assisted the client in delivering training in German. The project was completed smoothly and on time and was a huge success.
Outcome
We delivered translated documents and training modules on time, along with on-site interpreting of instructional lectures. The workers understood more clearly the manufacturing process and their role in it. Workers’ performance improved by 150 per cent with our language solutions.
As the company started onboarding more workers, we delivered quick translations of their German documents into English for visa and work permit processing. The client was finally able to build a team of workers in the UK manufacturing unit.
